This book has pretty pictures - that's all I liked about it. There is basic color theory ( you can find described for free by numerous other artists). I only glimpsed at the book and description before I bought it. I had enjoyed the artist's work and have one of her books. I thought this would be a book of color recipes to show how the swatches were achieved. And also how these colors would be incorporated into the pictures. Instead it is just random swatches. And I guess you are just supposed to look at the pictures and try and match them up to see how she used them.So this is a $16 book to tell you to make swatches of your own paints ( I kid you not) and to look at different things for inspiration. Obviously plenty of people think this is fantastic but I don't buy many art books at this price. And generally not unless I see a flip thru because so many turn out to be a disappointment. I didn't with this one and have wasted money that could have been spent on another book or materials. So instead of inspiring it is just frustrating that someone charged so much for this. Beyond being some gorgeous eye candy, this isn't a very useful book. I definitely would not suggest it for beginners The color theory is extremely basic too basic to be of use to beginners...not enough info included for a good start and kindergarten basic for intermediate and advanced watercolorists. Basically, you get a cursory coverage of simple color theory with the bulk of the book dedicated to spreads based on color schemes with little to know information on how to arrive at the colors given. The author also references Dr. P H Martin Radiant liquid watercolors for what hint of mixing she does address. These are used in the graphics art industry for print purposes. They are gorgeous but also fatally unstable with exposure to light. They are due based and not pigments. I did not see this addressed in the book. Fun to play with, but if you want lasting art leave them off your palette!I am keeping the book as it has some pretty schemes and is fun to look at but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants true instruction in comic theory.
